Siamese Secret Restaurant – Miri

19

September

It used to be one of the very secretive place for me, due to its dim light and dark environment. Siamese Secrets has been operating for a few years. However, I rarely give them a visit for what I know and learn that their food prices are slightly high. Maybe because they serve beers? Or maybe they sell a little bit of Thai food which is not so authentic as well?

Its just another day after work that 2 of us are hunting for food. Friends over facebook ever commented that they have the best Pizza and Best Fried Kuih Tiaw. Its pass tensed. I think I’ve tried their Pizza before, admit that it is special but I would still prefer Pizza Hut.

Prices for the drinks also a little bit pricey, but I think its okay since they provide Tv, Wifi and Aircond for us. :)

The internal ambience is good. But the odor is bad.

The seating areas seems too packed, due to the wooden chairs and tables were huge. I try to avoid sitting near to the toilet but still I can feel that the odor are strong. I wonder why do other customers still can survive with that smell.

Alex order the Tom Yum Goong with rice. If not mistaken it should be around RM16.
Since they name themselves Siamese Secret,he expect it would be something as nice as what he had in Thailand. The bowl came out to be very big but the ingredients is just a few spoonful. I could see the disappointment on his face, and on the eyes, the tears are dropping. Authentic doesn’t mean it must be over spicy, this is not what we really had in Thailand lor!

I got the Fried Kuih Tiaw with beef. RM 8 if not mistaken. :)

Ok, the beef is a LOT… Portion is fine for me, but the taste, HEY! who is the one who wrote it facebook saying that this is the best Kuih Tiaw in MIRI!? Don’t believe it… their standard probably drop.

It’s no longer a secret. I think this place could only be a place for a small gathering, *not a big one* since its very packed. Or a place for beer gardening. Else, I cant find a reason again for me to be here. Too much disappointment, and hoping for improvement. It’s time for Change!

But one good thing about Siamese Secrets, they operate from 3pm till 5am! You don’t worry you cant find food in the middle of the night!

Temerloh, where good people and food meets

19

September

If you wonder where Temerloh is, then maybe Wikipedia could tell you more. Temerloh is a small town located in the Central Pahang. Its my 1st visit to this town, but it has been years since my last visit to Pahang. In my memories, people in Pahang are friendly, as it today, they are still remain friendly! :)

We were there for a short visit which lasted for 5 days. I did google the place before I went there, and I did expect it could be a small town just like Sibu or Miri. Driving from Kuala Lumpur to Temerloh takes about 2 and half hour, and we had our midnite supper at Bukit Tinggi.

Temerloh does have a very strategic location.
Its always a few hours drive, then you could reach to either Kuala Lumpur or Kuantan.

Probably because of the conveniences, it slow down their development. From what I could see, the biggest building available would be The Store Supermarket. Choices of Hotels are quite limited , maybe people would just come here for a day trip.
Although Temerloh is popular of Ikan Patin but maybe I was there during the Puasa Season, hence most of the time the stall was close. I did not have a chance to taste the IKAN PATIN!

Hence I could only try out their local chinese food, which is bowl licking too!

Personally, I love the green noodle. It is actually made of Cabbage.

While the yellowish one is made of Egg.
Taste good in soup or make it dry. I love the fishballs too..
Food prices in Temerloh is more or less then same compare to Miri.
A bowl of kolomee would cost around RM3 – 5 depends on the ingredients you ask.

This is the Chinese Restaurant where its located between Temerloh and Mentakab.  Good food! Good Food!

Hey, hey! Even Temerloh have OLD TOWN why don’t we have one in Miri?

However, I do enjoy with the good food and good people. In this peaceful town, everyone seems to know each other, regardless of races. I will definitely come back again and try out the Ikan Patin!

After 3 Cafe & Little Banquet – Miri

19

September

It was out of a sudden, we notice a new eatery place blooming out in the middle of Miri Old Streets off Kingsway Road. However, I feel that the owner of this cafe seems to be extraordinary. For me, I don’t think the location is gonna be as strategic as they thought or maybe I am wrong.

Somehow this place used to be an “Open Air Karaoke” for the hawkers. Which it don’t even attract much of the people to go near this streets if its not because of the Magistrate offices. Its pretty amaze that After Three could rent down this “PUBLIC OWN” place and turn into such a beautiful cafe and restaurant. At least, this is some credit for the landscaping, it turns the “Old” street of Miri into a “New” one!

After 3 cafe is attach with Little Banquet. While After 3 is serving ala carte dish, from local economical food to western food, Little Banquet is open for booking only if you want to have a private function over there.  From what I could see, it roughly accommodate up to 10 tables including a small stage only. So that’s why it is call as Little Banquet.

So here I’m gonna do a review for After 3 since I haven’t been to Little Banquet. From what I understand, the origin of After 3 was started in Kuching, Sarawak. So this could be branded as Local Franchise. They have several branches over Sarawak. By the name itself, it could be quite attracting and easy to memorize. So its gonna be the talk of the City! Oh ya, they serve no pork. So Muslim friends, do feel free to give them a try.

I’ve tried their western food once in Bintulu, I swear I will never try that again. So this time, we go for Seafood fried rice.

Alex enjoy the fried rice. I think its nice.  Somehow, they mistaken the drinks for us.
He ordered Barley Peng and it turn out Horlick Peng. =.=|||

I had Fried Kuih Tiaw with Beef RM 6.50 and a glass of Honey Sea Coconut.
Taste good, only that the price and portion would be a bit out of ratio.
During our Second Visit, Alex want to try something new. He had this Chicken Chop with noodle. If not mistaken it cost about RM5.80.

The sauce taste like Thai Sauce but at least, this time the portion and the price ration does match!

As for me, oh, I fall in love with their Fried Rice. Hence I go for Yang Zhou Fried Rice. Absolutely nice!
See, I even emptied the plate! Omaigoat!

Out of 10. I would rate as below:
Food: 6 – Food is consider good for what I’ve tried
Drink: 7 – Drinks ok, so far no special drinks available.
Service: 6 – Everything seems new, need sometime to pick up. Wrong bills, wrong orders.
Price: 6 – With such environment, the price is reasonable. Yet they do have promotion items such as Kopi -O for RM1.
Environment : 7 – The aircond need to adjust, slightly hot in the afternoon at the front part.
Parking: 3  – I think this is the worst case. Where you need to park accross the road to get a good parking. Unless you go at night. And this place often face traffic jam during the peak hours.
Cleanliness: 6 – Everything seems transparent, except their kitchen. Somehow, overall environment is clean enough as it now.

The next to be reviewed will be The Little Banquet. Looking forward if there’s any occasion gonna be held here. Are you inviting me over?

So have you been to After 3 or Little Banquet? Do let me know how’s your point of view towards this cafe.

Kent’s Garden – Miri

06

September

This is when again, I talk about good food.Although the work schedule has been quite pack, but out of the blue we found this little eatery opens in Miri.

A very fascinating concept, which is very fresh for Mirian.

I couldn’t figure out what style or concept that they are applying, not really like Balinese, not Vietnamese as well but somehow it does make us feel good and comfortable in the open spaces while enjoying the good food.

Kent’s Garden was previously known as Kent’s Kitchen which was located at Sibu – near to the bus terminal. Somehow, it wasn’t last long in Sibu due to certain factors i bet. Hmm, probably people in Sibu would still prefer for RM2 kampua rather than having those RM6 Penang Fried Kuih Tiaw.

Ive visited this place for 3 times in a month. It could be saying that I bring the rain to the shop during my each visit. But isn’t that rain stands for wealth in the chinese Feng Shui? No wonder their business is getting better and better even though they don’t even have a signboard here!

They don’t even bother to do much publicity, as they clearly understand good food and good service will immediately bring up lots of crowd. That’s the power of facebook and word of mouth!

From my personal review, I’m quite addicted to their juices and milkshake. Price are very reasonable ranging from RM3 to RM 6.50.

Secondly, their menu is quite limited, but good food come with a few choices is enough. If you are the lamb lover, please try out their lamb cube. During the weekend, they have special menu such as Lamb Shank. Some of my friend says, the lamb shank taste like Rendang!

Kent’s Garden is located at Kpg Pengkalan, Lutong, Miri.
If you can’t figure out where is that, maybe you could refer to the map below or visit their facebook.

Cameron Highlands – Part 5 – Steamboat at Highlands Restaurant

27

May

If you never try Cameron Highland’s steamboat, meaning that you wasn’t there before. In this little town, steamboat restaurant is just one next to each other. In the cool temperature, its best to have hot steamboat at night. The most traditional would be the charcoal steamboat.

We asked around for the most recommended one, as advised Restoran Highlands could be the popular among the locals. It is just located behind the busy street, not that obvious, but their business is consider very good. They serve traditional Charcoal Steamboat with the very long funnel to avoid big wind blow off the fire.

The shop was just a simple coffee shop style. They will asked you the portion you want, and just wait to be served.

We ordered for 2 person’s portion. First plate served with Bihun, Veges, Assorted Meat Balls & Eggs.

The second plates come with assorted seafood.

And the final plate comes with meat plates. These are the plates that served for steamboat.

All looks so fresh and delicious! Tender & Juicy!

Alright, both of us are very hungry. Can’t wait any longer for the things to cook. We finished up everything except the plates!

Let me show you the tall funnel. Very cool right? And look, the charcoal are burning inside.

We enjoyed the meal :) There’s actually lots of other steamboat shop around. Some serve organic foods.

Anyway, we are happy with the food here. It’s only RM16 per person. I don’t think I could get these yummilicious steamboat back in Miri!  Yet another, MUST TRY! =)

Cameron Highlands – Part 4 – Weekend Pasar Malam

27

May

I’ve been told by my friend, Eunice, that there’s a weekend pasar malam in Brinchang Town, Cameron Highlands. Which it is very popular that almost all the tourist will aim to pay a visit.  The pasar malam only open for business during the weekend or school holidays. So if you come on weekdays, probably you don’t get to see all these interesting things.

In Miri, we do have Pasar Malam selling varieties of things, however, among 20 stalls, i bet 10 stalls are selling the same thing and they aren’t selling things that are extra ordinary than usual. But in Cameron, choices and prices are much more attractive.

This is one of the favourite stop. I bought Cactus for my 2 beloved friends in KL. At the same time, Alex bought me dozens of roses too! Haha, roses here are just too cheap! RM 10 I can get 2 dozens and they give you free some other flowers as well.

Not to forget, if you wanna eat cheap strawberry, then please get all in Pasar Malam. They said the strawberries here might be rejected or those overnight strawberries. So if you really want to buy, please check carefully and don’t bring it home. By the time you get home, its already rotten.

Vegetables are everywhere, they have sweet corns, cabbage, spinach and many many more. The sellers would claim that they plant at the backyard of their house in Cameron. That is just to assure you that the vege are fresh from Cameron. However, its not 100% true, the fact is lots of plants were import from Ipoh! Don’t believe? Then you go explore around Cameron, you hardly see other plantations other than TEA. ;) Do correct me if I’m wrong.

I found my favorite here, Tomatoes!!!
I take it as tidbits. They are selling 4 boxes for RM10. These are cherry tomatoes, not so sour, just nice.  In Miri I could hardly get such tomatoes, if yes, they are selling like RM10 per box!

The specialties from Cameron would be sweet potatoes, sweet corns and FRIED MUSHROOM! Most of the stalls are selling the tempura style mushrooms, vege and prawns. Price start from RM3. For the first few bites it could be very nice, but the more we eat, I think its a bit too oily.

Kenny Roger’s sister was here too. You check out the way they grilled the chicken. So professional la!

Surprisingly again, I saw lots of replica Crocs here. They are selling for RM20 per pair.  During this trip to KL, I finally realize there’s so much crocs in the market that we could hardly differentiate the replica and the genuine. Food good sake, buy the replica one is enough! Its 5x cheaper than the original!

Of course quality does matter! Please be a smart consumer lo!

We enjoyed the shopping at the pasar malam. We’ve filled up the tummy with many many tempura mushrooms, strawberries and sweetcorns. Other than the flowers Alex bought for me, and I manage to grab some magnets as souvenirs.

Take a look at those fruits magnets, it looks so real especially the Langsat! These are what we call valued for money! Its only RM2.50 for one magnet! Hahaha… I believe after reading my post, you would love to visit the pasar malam too right?

Don’t worry, school holidays is coming, do plan your trip earlier!

Cameron Highlands – Part 3 – Strawberry Moments

26

May

Finally come the best moment that I had in Cameron, that’s having afternoon tea with my dear at Strawberry Moment. I’ve been a big fans of strawberry, for the fact, I love its colour, its shape but not the taste!

The first thing we saw in Cameron, wasn’t the big cactus statue by the road side, but many many shops and stalls selling Strawberry’s product.  And this Strawberry Moments located at Brinchang Town was located strategically  to grab our attention! It was at the back part of Brinchang Town, near to Weekend Pasar Malam.

Before we proceed to take our order, we went to the shop next to it. It runs by the same entrepreneurs. Just that the green one are more into Cameron’s local product. I saw lots of new product that I hardly get it elsewhere. But of course, we are not going to buy as I hate to bring too much things back home. My bag will be very heavy! Ooops!

Proceed to the counter, I saw lots of Strawberry flavoured cakes and dessert. Oh, its my oh my! I love the cakes, they looks so yummilicious. However, we want to keep some space for steamboat dinner. So I ended up order a piece of Strawberry Strudel.

I’ve been seeing lots of blogs recommending Strudel in Cameron. At last, I know how nice is Strawberry Strudel taste like. The puffs are soft, with fresh cream and strawberry topping.  Arrrgh, it is real great!!

As for drinks, of course, the Fresh Strawberry Juice. We couldn’t find this anywhere else in Malaysia. Hello, I know you would tell me, it might be blend from rotten strawberries. I don’t care la, take it as detox lo!

We really enjoyed the afternoon tea, sit by the corridor of the shops, enjoying the cool breeze. It was raining cats and dogs so the temperature were a bit low.  I love this place so much, and I’ve become a Strawberry Freak!! So do Alex!

This is highly recommend, the things sold here are ranging from RM5-8. Price are reasonable! Don’t forget to give them a visit ya!

Food & Tea, My Second Review

26

May

Finally I’ve officially tried Food & Tea Hong Kong Restaurant. The franchise in Miri was launched 2 weeks ago, however it is still packed everyday. At least I could finally write a proper review for them.

As I mentioned before, the built up area wasn’t big enough. Hence, during the peak hours we could hardly get a seat.

Desperately, eagerly, we finally got a table for 3 of us! Hurray. Thanks to the boss for helping us the ladies to reserve a table.

It took us sometime to look over the menu.  The green jumbo glass that I’m having is Jumbo Green Tea. Worth for the price, best thirst quencher of the day!

Meanwhile, Yen order Double-Boiled Apple with Red Dates Tea.
It looks much different from the menu.

Pris, she’s been tempting for the 2 balls that I posted in FB the day before. So of course she’s here for the glutinous ball in ginger soup.

Surprisingly, my Shanghai Style Vegetable Rice with Chicken Chop came first. I was really surprised, its totally different from the pictures.

Before I order, I’ve doubt it would  be too costly to have this RM10.90 per bowl. But now the answer is obvious, its overcharged for this dish compare to the portion served. Other than the price, the food are okay.

Yen says that the Macau Pork Chop Burger taste good, RM5.90 I think its worth.

I remember when I was in Macau, I did queue to buy the pork burger which was very popular in Macau. Since then, I swear i would not recommend anyone to eat that as its totally tasteless!  So no need to go Macau, you can get it here in Food & Tea.

Buttered Chicken Diced Rice. The picture shows good, the real dish looks even better. However, Pris says, the taste wasn’t that great!

This is the carrot cake, take away for Pris’s Ah Ma. RM 3.20.
Have to ask Ah Ma how does it taste lo..

Food Wise, need lots of improvement.
Drinks Wise, quite good.
Service & Attitude: Very friendly, but maybe they are busy, so some ladies over here look so stressed and fierce.
Environment: Hopefully they can expand bigger room.

Overall for this second review, everything is in my expectations.
Total expenses: RM46.55
